In-service Training Facility of Advance Veterinary Education and Professional Development for Veterinary Professionals (IVPD) is a Government of the Punjab sponsored project which is being executed at and by University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore. The total duration of the project is 36 months which is worth Rs.176.670 Million PKR. Recently the livestock sector has emerged as a priority sector. Livestock has been subsistence sector dominated by small holders to meet their needs of milk, food and cash income on daily basis. In the rural areas, livestock is considered as a more secure source of income for the small farmer’s and landless poor’s. It has become important source of employment generation in rural areas. The poverty incidence in Pakistan is determined by income variability and thus livestock is the best hope for poverty reduction as it can uplift the socioeconomic conditions of our rural masses. The agriculture sector is the lifeline of Pakistan’s economy provides livelihood for two thirds of the country’s population and contributed 18.9 per cent to GDP, 60 per cent to exports and 42.3 per cent to the labor force. Most of its contribution comes from crops and livestock in almost equal proportions. Livestock and fisheries contribute 58.92 per cent of the agriculture value added and 11.11 per cent to the national GDP. Historically, it has been a subsistence sector dominated by small and landless farmers to meet their needs for food, draft animals, and some cash income. Nearly 8 million families involved in livestock raising deriving more than 35 percent income from livestock production activities (Economic survey of Pakistan 2017-18). Today’s world is fast moving towards knowledge-based economy, where universities have become focal points from economic development and sustainable growth in the country. University of Veterinary & Animal Sciences Lahore, one of the top ten universities of Pakistan, is Flagship University for livestock and allied sectors. University has strong realization of challenges of human resource development and innovative research impacting the long term food security in the country. UVAS has been proactively instrumental in catering growing needs of the industry, community and stakeholders in terms of HRD, research, policy framework and knowledge sharing. The vision of the UVAS is to “Nation’s leading Public Sector University with global recognition due to its quality in teaching and research, civic engagement and economic development.” As per vision, UVAS is playing a pivotal role in economic development by promoting applied research, enhancing bilateral collaboration with the industry, promoting entrepreneurship, mentoring business opportunities and triggering enabling environment for sustainable growth. In collaboration with the industry, UVAS infrastructure is optimally used for providing training and research opportunities in a real-time business situation. Commercialization of our research, expertise, knowledge, skill and technology has resulted into significant economic returns. Human resource development is one of the pillars of livestock sector policy. To handle such huge quantum of animal population well versed and proficient veterinary human resource is the need of time. The capacity for disease diagnosis, control and prevention by academia and field vetenarians is an integral part of the quality of veterinary education and services. Competency and capability to successfully control of animal disease is an important part of human resource development. There is need to refine the technical expertise and competencies of in-service veterinary professionals as well as faculty members through refresher courses / workshops and trainings to make sound professional judgments.
